Companions are characters with backstories that you can recruit for a large amount of gold. They are located in taverns. When you recruit one you can then go into your inventory and at the middle/top of the screen is your characters name and some Left/Right arrows, click on the arrows to change to your companions and equip them how you want.
In the Clan parties menu you can see where your companion is. If he's in an active caravan its location will be under Parties. You can order the caravan to disband an your companion will either go find you, or go to the nearest relatively friendly town. Either way, you can see his location in the Clan member page.

You get companions pre levelled to a certain point, but you should be able to pick focus and perks from there on as they level.
